Shapes and colours first
Before you even read a sign, its shape and colour tell you what kind it is. Circles give orders, triangles warn, rectangles inform.

Signs giving orders — circles
Red circles prohibit (no entry, maximum speed limits); blue circles are mandatory instructions (minimum speed, compulsory routes).

Warning signs — triangles
A red-bordered triangle always warns of a hazard ahead, such as a bend, junction, crossing or roadworks.

Direction and information signs — rectangles
Green backgrounds are used for primary routes, white for non-primary, blue for motorways, and brown for tourist attractions.

Signs used only on motorways
Motorway signs have their own set of signals and countdown markers — these come up often in the theory test.
